It isn’t easy to escape addiction. In fact, it can feel like a goal that is impossible to reach. Not only is it difficult for physical and psychological reasons, but oftentimes, it also presents a significant financial challenge.

While the benefits that you receive from attending an addiction rehab facility far outweigh the cost – we’re talking about a potentially life-saving program, after all – the reality is that many people who are struggling with addiction don’t think they can afford to go to treatment.

In a 2017 survey performed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, there were approximately 20.7 million people who needed treatment for addiction to drugs or alcohol. Of those 20.7 million people, nearly 88 percent of them did not get it.

Do Rehabs Accept Your Insurance?

In most cases, rehab facilities in Fresno do accept insurance. That doesn’t mean that you won’t have any out-of-pocket expenses, but typically insurance will cover at least part of the cost of addiction treatment. Just how much your insurance provider will cover depends on the benefits of your specific policy.

When you begin looking for a rehab in Fresno that accepts insurance, the first thing you need to do is find out exactly what your insurance policy covers. To determine what your plan covers, there are a few things to look for.

Does it Cover Behavioral Health?

Behavioral health coverage includes treatment for an individual’s mental well-being. Substance abuse treatment is included in behavioral health services.

Is It an HMO or PPO?

There are two common types of health insurance plans – the Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and the Preferred Provider Organization (PPO). If you have an HMO, you have access to doctors and healthcare facilities within a network of providers who work with the insurance company to lower rates for plan members. With a PPO, members have the freedom to pick a doctor or healthcare facility of their choosing, but it’s usually at a higher cost. PPO plans do have a network of providers that members can pick from, but there are fewer restrictions if they choose to see out-of-network providers. When you have an HMO and choose an out-of-network drug rehab, you may end up paying for treatment out-of-pocket, though this isn’t always the case. Some HMO plans will cover out-of-network providers.

All of this can be confusing. That’s why it’s best to speak with your insurance provider about your options before you choose the facility where you will seek treatment. That way, you will know which rehabs in Fresno accept HMO or PPO insurance before you have your heart set on a specific treatment center.

How Much Does Insurance Cover for Your Treatment?

The exact amount of coverage you are eligible for varies by insurance provider and plan. But most insurance providers in California do cover at least a portion of rehab treatment expenses. Reach out to your insurance provider directly to find out exactly which types and amounts will be covered, how long you will be covered, and what portion you will be responsible for.

There are two major types of insurance coverage: public insurance, and private insurance.

If you have private insurance, it may be that you are part of a group plan (that you receive from an employer, who typically pays a portion of your premium), in which case the insurance will usually cover rehab treatment in accordance with the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008.

If you have private insurance purchased via the Affordable Care Act (ACA), addiction treatment is considered an essential health benefit and it is required to be covered by new plans in the Health Insurance Marketplace. However, it may or may not be the type of coverage you are looking for. For example, your plan may cover only detox and outpatient programs, but not residential treatment.

What If You Don’t Have Insurance Coverage for Drug or Alcohol Rehab Treatment?

If you don’t have insurance coverage for addiction treatment, don’t despair, there are still some options you can explore.

Even if your employer isn’t required to provide you with addiction treatment coverage by law, they may still offer some benefits. Look at your employee handbook or talk to a Human Resources representative to see if there are options for you. You will likely have to take a leave of absence to attend rehab, and an HR representative will be able to discuss the process as well as provide you will all your available options.

Discuss Your Options with the Treatment Center

The cost of rehab may seem intimidating, but don’t allow that to stop you from seeking treatment. Some detox centers in Clovis accept patients with no insurance, and instead offer monthly payment plans to make treatments more affordable.
